Up front, Vancouver has made a fantastic new addition in Octavio Rivero. MLS defenders be warned, he has pace and skill, and is a massive improvement over the rotation used last season of Mattocks and Salgado. Mattocks is still around to spell Rivero and learn under him, but Rivero could be the most exciting addition to the MLS forward ranks.
In the mid, the marvelous Pedro Morales returns in the number 10 role, while the attacking three in completed with the pace filled Manneh on the left, in what could be his breakout star making season, and the veteran Rosales on the right. A better three attacking mids may not exist in MLS. In the holding roles, the impressive Laba will be joined by Kofi when fit, but until then, homegrown Marco Bustos looks to fill in, as well as potential wide man and midfield super replacement Russell Teibert. While not the sexiest line up in MLS, there are few MLS sides that can say they have so many potential super stars in their front six.
Defense is where the real questions lie about Vancouver's season. Rodriguez or Pa Modou Kah will join with the strong Waston in central defense, while the moderately serviceable Harvey and Beitashour fill in the fullback positions. Lana and Kofi should go a long way to protecting the back four, but they need to step up if Vancouver is finally going to be taken seriously as an MLS Cup contender. The veteran Pat Ousted returns between the sticks.
Overall, I have high expectations for Vancouver, though am cautiously optimistic. There are so many talented young players waiting to light up MLS, if they can put it all together, they could be the surprise package of the MLS season.

Last season, Toronto threw money at their roster, unbalanced as it was, hoping they would finally break through and become a playoff team. While he started hot, striker Jermaine Defoe soon became injured, and petered out before being sold this winter to Sunderland in England. Gilberto started cold, but heated up in July, but not enough for TFC brass, and he too has been shipped out to Vasco da Gama. Michael Bradley had a strong season, but his leave for the World Cup, and tiring legs in the second half of the season couldn't push TFC over the hill for the first time.
This season, they finally seem to have balance and a plan. They still are splashing the cash, but now with a wiser intent.
Up front, Jozy Altidore returns to MLS from Sunderland, replacing the departed Jermaine Defoe. While Defoe was more prolific when he was fit, Altidore is less pace filled poacher, and more bruiser with a nose for goal, giving TFC the edge they lacked last season.
Supporting Altidore will be new DP addition "Atomic Ant" Sebastian Giovinco. The minuscule creative dynamo looks to chip in a few goals this season at the number 10 position, while creating for all of the other attacking options Toronto will have in play. The wide men will be new addition Robbie Findley out right, and converted from central mid Jonathan Osario out left, with the pace filled Jackson spelling either man. In central mid, new captain Michael Bradley returns in his box to box role, now accompanied by Benoit Cheyrou. Together, they will provide excellent cover by the defense while also complementing the attack.
Defensively, West Ham United picked up Doneil Henry, leaving a hole now to be filled by Damien Perquis, teaming with former TFC captain Caldwell in central defense. The fullback position will be filled by returning veterans Morrow and the underrated Bloom. The man between the sticks will be Joe Bendik. Though shaky last season, if the TFC defense can solidify, their goal output should be enough to rise them up the table.
Overall, TFC looks more solid than they ever have before, and if after another massive financial outlay, ninth coach in TFC history Greg Vanney could be under the most pressure of any manager this season. They need a strong start, but that could be hampered by stadium renovations that will see them on the road until May. A heavy back loaded home schedule has worked in the past for Sporting KC, but with the pressures of Toronto, the early season could tell the tale of where TFC finish.

After a season disrupted by the World Cup, in which several star players came back to Kansas City looking gassed, Sporting KC backed their way into the playoffs, and exited with a whimper. Now refreshed, (though Gold Cup may be another disruption) and newly in the Western Conference, KC looks to push back on and compete for the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup.
Up front, Dom Dwyer returns to lead the attack, with newly acquired Bernardo Anor on the left, and Kristin Nemeth on the right completing the front three. With the power and nose for goal of Dwyer, the pace filled skill of Anor and in particular Nemeth, the KC attack seems to be its best of all time.
In the midfield, with the additions of Anor and Nemeth to the front three, Graham Zusi has been freed up to embark upon the number 10 role behind Dwyer. Benny Feilhaber returns, as does former KC and Wigan man Roger Espinoza, a sure miss the past two seasons. While depth may be a question mark for KC all over the pitch, those who do start are a versatile bunch, capable of flowing from one role to another should the need arise. The thought of a new DP arriving in July to bolster depth and push on in some form of attacking midfield role, could push KC to new heights.
Defensively, Matt Besler returns to pair with Ike Opara, replacing the departed Collin. In the fullback positions, Seth Sinovic returns, as does Tommy Myer on the right, though with Myer struggling for fitness in the early season, Ellis or Peterson could find themselves filling in.
In goal, Luis Marin arrives, with many believing he could be the best keeper in MLS. That remains to be seen, but with a solid veteran defense in front of him, as well as the protection they receive from the returning Espinoza, Marin may not need to even be that good.
Overall, KC looks to be back on track and ready to push on. Even in a difficult Western Conference, look for KC to compete for the Western title, as well as the Supporter's Shield all season long.

Last season Seattle won the Supporters Shield, but found themselves at home for MLS Cup Final. Each season they take another step, but have yet to put it all together when it really counted. For 2015, they basically stand pat with what they had last season, and time will tell if it was a wise move or not.
Up front, they return double MVP candidates in Obafemi Martins and Clint Dempsey, the most potent one-two punch in all of MLS. If they should continue firing, it could be a very good season for Seattle.
In the mid, again we have the same line up we saw last season. The only change may come due to the fitness issues of defensive mid Alonso due to offseason groin surgery, with Andy Rose filling in if he isn't fit enough to return for the start of the season. Pineda returns alongside Alonso, with Pappa and Neagle returning on the wings. How much time steal of the Super Draft Christian Roldan gets with such a veteran presence in front of him will be interesting.
In defense, defender of the year Chad Marshall returns, with the versatile Brad Evans making the permanent switch to CB to partner him. On the right, the departed DeAndre Yedlin will be replaced by English veteran Tyrone Mears. On the left, while many give the role to Gonzalez, Dylan Remick and Andres Correa look to be fighting for time at fullback as well. Really the only source of change for the Sounders, defense could end up telling the tale of their season, as the solid Frei returns behind them in goal.
Overall, not much has changed with Seattle. While they lost attacking presence and pace on the right with Yedlin departing for Tottenham in England, the veteran Mears should add more of a defensive presence. Beyond that it is same as it ever was. While they should score many goals this season, my interest in Seattle has waned as the years have passed. They either need to win MLS Cup, or they need to blow it up and start over.

Two bits of good news for San Jose in 2015, after two sub par seasons, is a new stadium, and the return of MLS Legend Dom Kinnear to the bench. In the nine seasons since Kinnear left San Jose, he led Houston to 4 MLS Cup Finals, winning it all twice. San Jose hopes he brings some of that mojo with him upon his return.
Up front, Chris Wondolowski will be joined by the blistering pace of new man Innocent Emeghara. How the more plodding and poaching Wondo mixes with the speed and nose for goal of Emeghara could tell the tale of the season for San Jose.
In the mid, some questions arise as to what Kinnear will do. If he is in the mood to attack, he can play a diamond, with Garcia at the top, Pierazz at the base, and Shea Salinas and Tommy Thompson or Sanna Nyassi as the wide men. (Thompson up top should Garcia miss a match) If he wants to play in a more typical Dom Kinnear style, Garcia can play in the middle of a three, with Salinas left, Emeghara right, and JJ Koval holding alongside Peirazz.
Defensively, the group from 2014 mainly returns, with Goodson and Bernardez pairing in central defense, with Stewart and Wynne at fullback. In the absence of veterans Jon Busch and Andy Gruenbaum, new starter David Bingham takes the big gloves.
Overall, it would be easy to look at the new stadium (new stadium bump?) and quality stewardship of Dominic Kinnear, and predict that San Jose will grind out results, show a little more attacking flair than in the past few seasons, and solidify their defense with two holding mids. It would also be easy to see it as a season too soon before San Jose solidifies themselves in a tough Western Conference.

Now in his second season, manager Jeff Cassar has seemingly killed the Real Salt Lake well known 4-4-2 tight diamond formation in favor of a 4-3-3 or 4-2-1-2-1 formation.
Up front, much improved star man, the minuscule Plata has been lost during preseason due to a broken foot, putting the attack in a bit of flux. In his absence, the quality veteran Saborio looks to be the main man up top, with the pace filled Garcia and Jaime the wide men in an attacking front 3.
In the midfield, the creative force of Javier Morales returns, with defense minded Kyle Beckerman behind him to cover for the defensive frailties of the front men. A new wrinkle in light of the Grabavoy departure will be bright young thing Luis Gil into the mid. While Gil would like to work his way into the number 10 position occupied by Morales, for now it seems Cassar just wants to get him on the field and will slot him next to Beckerman in a more defensive role, though you would imagine with the work rate of Beckerman, he would be allowed more chances to push forward on the counter.
Defensively, with the departures of Wingert, Salcedo, and Borchers, Schuler will be joined in the center of defense by the returning to Salt Lake Olave, while Beltran will be joined at fullback by the solid Phillips. As usual, they will be protecting a goal covered by the ageless Nick Rimando.
Over all, Real Salt Lake still has a veteran presence, with added youth and pace to spice things up for the 2015 season. While a case can be made for RSL to be competing for the Western Conference, a case can also be made that new tactics and injuries could see them well outside the playoff places in a conference now containing Sporting KC and Houston Dynamo, as well as the usual suspect powerhouses. RSL will no doubt be in the conversation all season long, but I see them falling just short, especially if they lose the likes of Beckerman (and perhaps Gil) during the Gold Cup this summer.

Season Preview: PORTLAND TIMBERS FC

Last season Portland struggled to turn losses into draws, and draws into wins. This season may be no different, as the injury bug has already devastated the team. A few more and they might as well call it a day.
Up front, the Timbers hopes rely upon Fernando Adi to get the goals to make things happen. While he has the potential, I'm still not sold on Adi.
In the mid, Diego Valeri will be missing as he recovers from injury, so Gaston Fernandez will get the chance to show his skill in the creative/attacking role behind Adi. Out wide, Wallace and (soon to be US citizen) Darlington Nagbe look to finally make a real name for themselves in MLS. Holding things down in the middle of the park will be veteran Diego Chara, and with the injuries to captain Will Johnson and also his replacement Ben Zemanski, aged veteran Jack Jewsbury. Look for Nick Besler to compete for time alongside Chara while Johnson continues his rehab.
Defensively, after leaking 52 goals in 2014, the league's worst record, DP Liam Ridgewell is now being teamed with the best beard (very Timbers worthy) Nat Borchers. They could potentially be one of the best CB pairings in the league. The defensive questions however remain with Villafana and Powell in the fullback positions, serviceable players, but nothing to inspire you.
In goal, Ghana international Adam Kwarasey looks to replace Donovan Ricketts after a season to forget for the big man and the Timbers. While a dramatic improvement on paper, its hard to blame Ricketts for the Timbers defensive whoas from last season. Early doors, it looks to be a push.
Overall, Portland looks strong, yet frail. A DP addition in the midfield or forward position come summer would go a long way to saving what could be a brutal start for the Timbers. With two powerful additions to the conference, the Timbers may be competing with San Jose, Houston, and Colorado as the also rans.
